Aging Gracefully with Breast Implants
Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures; implants can give women the curvier figure they’ve always wanted or correct a profile left deflated after pregnancy or significant weight loss. Patients enjoy a sexier, better-proportioned silhouette after breast augmentation, and this transformation often results in a newfound sense of self-confidence. However, what a woman considers to be an ideal look for her breasts in her 20s may not be the same look she’ll prefer in her 40s, 50s, and beyond. Luckily, there are ways to ensure an enhanced, yet age-appropriate, bust line that lasts a lifetime.
When Choosing Implants
Often, the aesthetic look women want to achieve will largely depend on their stage in life. By choosing different implant options over the years, patients can make sure that their breast implants continue to meet their aesthetic ideal even as their definition of that standard evolves.
Women opting for breast implants face a variety of decisions before their procedure:
- Saline or silicone?
- Over or under the muscle?
- Round or teardrop shape?
- Moderate, moderate plus, or high profile?
The choices the patient makes will depend on her surgeon’s advice as well as the final results she hopes for from the surgery.
Why Is Profile Important?
Whatever their size or whether they’re saline or silicone, implants come in different profiles and each results in a unique aesthetic. The profile of an implant determines its outward projection from the chest. During consultation, detailed measurements are made of the patient’s chest to determine how wide an implant her body can accommodate for the best breast augmentation result.
If an implant has a profile that’s too wide, the new breasts can either touch in the middle, protrude beyond the sides of the chest toward the underarm area, or both.
A moderate profile implant has a wider base diameter and will have the least projection compared to other profiles. A high profile implant has the narrowest diameter and therefore has the most dramatic projection. A moderate plus profile implant falls in between the other two with regard to diameter and projection. Even if they’re the same volume, implants with different profiles will result in very different looks on different women.
Picking the Perfect Profile
Because the profile of an implant can largely dictate the final appearance of a breast enhancement, a surgeon can dramatically alter a patient’s results with different profile options in accordance with her age and personal preferences. Younger patients generally want to harness the look of natural, youthful breasts, which typically have a perkier appearance and sit higher on the chest. For these patients, a high profile implant will grant that fuller, higher look.
As women age, the ligaments supporting the breasts lose elasticity and fatty breast tissue loses natural volume, resulting in breasts that hang slightly lower and have a flatter appearance. Older patients or patients replacing implants they received when they were younger who wish to mimic the appearance of naturally aging breasts can trade in a high profile implant for a moderate or moderate plus profile instead for a very natural look. Older women may also downsize their implants for reduced volume as well as a more subtle profile.
Regardless of a patient’s chronological age, variations in implant profiles allow women to maintain the sexy, shapely silhouette that implants provide while remaining age-appropriate and maintaining a beautiful, natural look.
